Located between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova emerged as an independent republic following the collapse of the USSR in 1991. Today, Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe and young people growing up in the country face high unemployment, few prospects and the threat of drugs and crime.
Spirit of Soccer's work in Moldova illustrates our ability to adapt our curriculum to meet particular local issues. Together with our partners the British Embassy, Embassy of the United States to Moldova, the Moldova Ministry of the Interior and the Football Federation of Moldova we have delivered coaching clinics focusing on conflict resolution and youth development in Moldova and Transnistria - a breakaway territory located mostly on a strip of land between the Dniester River and the eastern Moldovan border to Ukraine.
We have trained and graduated 50 local coaches at UEFA C-license standard, including 20 police officers both male and female, to work with children in both Moldova and Transnistria promoting ethnic tolerance under our program slogan 'Together We Are One Team'. Since 2009 over 2,000 children have taken part in this program which is held annually through Soccer Peace camps.
